U.S. Embassy Niamey informs U.S. citizens of a continued teachers’ strike that will be extended from March 13 – 17, 2017, if a resolution is not reached over the weekend. In past instances in which education contractors and teachers have gone on strike, students have become agitated and started spontaneous demonstrations in in which they burned tires and hurled rocks at passersby.
Previous student demonstrations have affected the following routes: Tillabery Road, Boulevard Mali Bero, and the Kennedy Bridge.
Please remember, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
