Deputy Chief of Mission Susan N’Garnim

Susan N’Garnim (pronounced nn-GAR-nim) is the Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Niamey, Niger.  She began service in Niger on August 23, 2021.

Most recently, she served as the Management Counselor in Addis Ababa, serving the bilateral Mission to Ethiopia and the U.S. Mission to the African Union.

Susan joined the Department of State in 2001 and spent seven years as a civil servant in what is now the Bureau of Budget and Planning before converting to the Foreign Service as a Management Generalist.  She has served as Management Officer in Nouakchott and Ouagadougou, Deputy Executive Director in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and Senior Regional Financial Management Officer in Dakar.

Prior to joining the Department, Susan worked for the African Development Foundation for several months.  She also has 11 years of experience with Peace Corps as a Volunteer math teacher in Gabon and various staff positions in Chad, Eritrea, and Washington, DC.

Originally from Chapel Hill, NC, Susan holds an undergraduate degree from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, where she majored in History with an Intercultural Studies concentration and minors in Political Science and Math.  She completed her Master’s in Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Behavior at the University of Virginia.  She is an avid sports fan and enjoys puzzles, sewing, and other crafts.
