Remembering the Fallen on the Sixth Anniversary of the Tongo Tongo Attack 

Six years ago on October 4, 2017, four Nigerien and four American soldiers lost their lives in an ambush near Tongo Tongo.  Today, the U.S. Embassy remembers these brave men who fought on in the face of overwhelming odds.  We honor their sacrifice and express our deepest sympathy to their families, friends, and communities. 

The challenges posed by terrorism are not limited to a specific region—we all feel the impact.  The United States is committed to Niger and its people, and efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
