Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Niamey, Niger (April 17, 2020)
Location: Niamey, Niger
Event: U.S. Embassy Niamey has received reports of proposed demonstration throughout the city of Niamey: neighborhoods specifically identified are around Goudel near the Embassy, Talladje on the airport road, Saga after Gamkalle on Kollo road, and the northwest side of Koubia on Tillabery road.
The Embassy has received reports of the National Guard deployed to Goudel, located approximately 1 km northwest of the Embassy, in the vicinity of Les Roniers near the intersection of Powerline road and Embassy road. Members of the Goudel community have been observed carrying machetes, rocks and sticks. Traffic is currently blocked on Embassy road, near the intersection with Powerline road. The National Guard is attempting to disperse the crowd in Goudel.
Please avoid any movement in these areas.
The Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to exercise caution as demonstrations can occur suddenly anywhere throughout the city. If you see a crowd forming, do not attempt to drive through it. Leave the area and use an alternate route.
The Embassy will continue to review the security situation and provide additional information as appropriate.
