Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations in Niamey Week of August 29

Statement on Presidential Elections in Niger

United States Embassy Niamey

U.S. Embassy Niamey informs U.S. citizens that demonstrations are expected throughout the week of August 29 to September 3 in the area of the Grand Marché and along the adjacent portions of Avenue de la Liberté. Large crowds are expected in the area in protest of recent municipal actions to clear temporary vendors from the market.  Police are expected to continue to be present at the scene and have reportedly used tear gas. The U.S. Embassy encourages U.S. citizens to avoid these areas.  U.S. citizens residing in the area should monitor the situation on local media and stay vigilant.

Please remember, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
