U.S. Embassy Applauds Nigeriens for Tranquil Presidential Election
The U.S. Embassy congratulates the people of Niger who exercised their right to vote in the second round of their presidential election.
The U.S. Embassy noted an encouraging rate of participation, and embassy election monitors noted calm and peaceful conditions overall. Required election materials appeared to be available at polling stations and most opened on time, which was an improvement from the last elections on December 27.
We extend our condolences to the victims and family members of those involved in the incident in which seven people were killed by an explosive device in Dargol yesterday. We condemn all attacks and attempts to disrupt Niger’s legitimate democratic process. Such cowardly attacks have no place in a democratic society.
We encourage all stakeholders, no matter their political identity, to work together in the common interest of the Nigerien people and to ensure Niger achieves its first-ever peaceful democratic transfer of power in April.
We urge all party leaders to use the judicial procedures in place for electoral dispute resolution and to ensure their members remain patient and calm throughout the election certification process, voicing any objections through peaceful and legal means.
The United States is committed to promoting and strengthening democracies and civil societies. We encourage Niger to continue supporting democratic processes and the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
