U.S. Embassy Niamey has been closely following the prosecution of Moussa Aksar and Samira Sabou for defamation by means of electronic communication. We find the developments of December 27 and January 3 puzzling and concerning. We will continue to watch these cases closely, particularly during the appeal process.
The United States stands firmly on the principles of freedom of the press and free speech, recognizing that both are critical to good governance and democracy.
